On October 9, 2024, BrucePac, a meat processing establishment based in Durant, Oklahoma, announced a massive recall of approximately 9,986,245 pounds of ready-to-eat (RTE) meat and poultry products potentially contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. This decision follows routine testing conducted by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS), which confirmed the presence of Listeria in products produced between June 19 and October 8, 2024.

The recalled items were distributed to various establishments and restaurants across the nation. Products affected by the recall are identified by establishment numbers "51205 or P-51205" located under the USDA mark of inspection. Although no adverse reactions have been reported, consumers are advised to be cautious and consult healthcare providers if they experience any concerning symptoms.

Listeriosis, the infection caused by Listeria monocytogenes, poses serious health risks, particularly to older adults, pregnant women, and individuals with weakened immune systems. Symptoms can range from fever and muscle aches to more severe complications such as miscarriage or life-threatening infections in newborns. FSIS is urging restaurants and institutions to refrain from serving these products and to dispose of or return them to the place of purchase. As the investigation continues, more information regarding specific product labels will be made available.

For any questions related to the recall, consumers can contact BrucePac or the USDA Meat and Poultry Hotline for assistance.
